Ever since childhood, Deborah was conditioned to believe that God was the author of the bad, so she wanted nothing to do with him. She didn't foresee having a future, feeling that whatever came her way had to be accepted. Her remarkable story began at the tender age of three, when Finley’s mother divorced her father that was involved in organized crime in Chicago. Not long after, her mother married an abusive alcoholic who assaulted Finley and her family. Fed up with living in constant fear and violence, Deborah placed a call to her biological father to tell him about the abuse. What happened next was beyond comprehension.
Says Finley, “My dad had sent someone to kill my stepfather. About 45 minutes later, the doorbell rang. My stepfather was going to answer the door, when suddenly I heard ‘boom, boom, boom!’ Wood was flying everywhere. Someone had come and shot through the door and bullets went into every room.”
Despite the attempt on his life, her stepfather was unharmed—and her father was charged with involvement in the shooting. The night before her biological father’s court date, Finley secretly met with him at her grandparents house. “My father and I were sitting on the couch, and we were visiting after we had gone out for dinner. My grandfather stepped out and about ten minutes later, I thought i heard my grandpa returning up the stairs. Unfortunately, when the door flew open, it was a man with a shot gun. He shot and killed my father as I sat right beside him. My mother blamed me for the murder when she could have called to warn us ahead of time but she said that she didn't for fear of her own life.
Due to the trauma, Deborah was unable to speak for days with doctors saying she may never speak again, but the author credits her full recovery as a result of her grandmother’s prayers. She also dedicated a whole chapter to her grandma in her book and titled the chapter, “Power in a Grandma’s Prayers.” It was not long after, that Finley received Christ and came to the realization that God had protected her all throughout these events.
“I once had hurt, confusion, fear, depression, low self-esteem, and bitterness,” she explains, I had always wished and hoped that there was more to life but thought it was too good to be true. “But after receiving Christ, I found healing, forgiveness, peace, joy, confidence, and more. I wanted others who had gone through hard times to also find the truth, that there really is more to life, and that God is not the author of the bad but will help you through it. Things are subject to change because with God all things are possible. Says the author, "I hope [readers] will learn of God's love for them and be drawn to Him. I also hope it will cause them to examine their hearts and let go and let God help them. Because by yielding themselves to God and trusting in God, their health can improve, their quality of life can improve, and their future can become much brighter." As God says in the bible: " For I know the plans I have for you, "declares the Lord,"plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.. Jeremiah 29:11
This desire—coupled with the encouragement and support of her husband—led the author to begin penning What Your Future Holds and What You Can Do to Change It: Learn to Live in a Higher Realm of Life, a book that combines real-life experiences, proven facts, and biblical truths to give readers’ lives new meaning and purpose.
